What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in Baltimore
Three easy outfit palettes, thoughtful layers and a little preparation for photographs that feel like your family.
Before a family photo session, one question tends to take over the group chat: “What is everyone wearing?” You want the outfits to feel connected, the kids to be comfortable, and the photographs to look like something you will still love next year.
My approach is simple: choose a small color palette, mix in texture, and give everyone room to look like themselves. You do not need a new wardrobe or identical outfits to make beautiful fall portraits.

Start with one outfit you love
Choose one person's outfit first: a favorite dress, a great jacket or a sweater that feels comfortable and fits well. Pull two or three colors from that starting point for everyone else. Lay the clothes together on a bed, including shoes, so you can see the whole family’s palette at once.
As you add pieces, vary how much of each color each person wears. One person might wear an olive dress, another a cream sweater, and a child a camel cardigan. The colors connect the group while each outfit has its own character.
Three fall color palettes to make it easy
Warm & natural
Cream · Camel · Olive
Warm and understated. Try a cream knit, camel trousers or a cardigan, and an olive dress or jacket. Brown shoes tie the pieces together.
Rich & timeless
Navy · Burgundy · Cream
A richer, more dressed-up combination. Pair a burgundy dress or sweater with navy layers and a cream knit. Keep accessories simple.
Soft & classic
Soft blue · Denim · Taupe
Relaxed and connected. Combine a soft blue shirt, denim and a taupe cardigan. Cream or beige pieces can soften the palette, as the child’s outfit shows in the example above.
These are starting points, not a dress code. If your family loves another color, build around it. Black can work too; a textured knit or a lighter layer can add definition to an all-dark outfit.
Choose texture and movement
A cable-knit sweater, soft cardigan, corduroy trousers or a flowing skirt can add interest without relying on a strong print. Mix a few textures across the family instead of giving everyone the same fabric.
Before session day, try sitting, walking and lifting your arms in your outfit. Check that collars stay comfortable, waistbands do not pinch and layers sit naturally. Clothes that let you move make it easier to focus on your people.
Dress for the park and the actual weather
For an outdoor session at Patterson Park, choose shoes you can comfortably walk in on paths, grass and fallen leaves. Clean boots, loafers, flats or simple sneakers can all fit the right outfit. Save unfamiliar shoes for another day.
Check the forecast close to your session and bring a layer that complements your palette. A cardigan or jacket can become part of the photographs if it is cool. Let the weather guide the weight of your clothes rather than dressing for an imagined fall temperature.
Keep kids comfortable
Try children's outfits on ahead of time, including shoes. Scratchy fabrics, tight collars and shoes that rub can turn a good morning into a difficult one. Let them choose between two options that fit your palette so they have a little ownership of the outfit.
Bring wipes and a backup outfit for small children in case of a spill. Think of that extra outfit as a practical backup, not a planned wardrobe change. A simple, comfortable look is plenty.
Keep the distractions small
- Large logos and lettering: these can pull attention away from faces.
- Very bright neon: if you want a softer look, choose a more muted version of the color.
- Several competing prints: let one subtle pattern lead and use solids around it.
- Bulging pockets: put phones, keys and wallets in your bag before we start.
- Last-minute wardrobe experiments: choose a fit and style you already feel good in.
You do not have to avoid every pattern or buy matching outfits. A small floral print or a simple plaid can work well when the rest of the group picks up its colors.
Make it a family adventure
Let the outfits be the easy part, then give everyone something to look forward to. Invite the kids to choose between two comfortable looks, put a favorite song on for the drive, and plan a little family time after your session—a walk or a favorite snack together.
During our time together, there is room for hand-holding, a little movement and the expressions that happen when you enjoy each other. You do not have to turn the session into a performance or ask everyone to hold a perfect smile.
Your night-before outfit check
- Lay out everyone's clothes, shoes and layers together.
- Steam or press visible wrinkles and check for lint.
- Try everything on, especially children's shoes and new pieces.
- Pack a small bag with wipes, water and any needed backup clothes.
- Review your session confirmation for the meeting instructions and arrival details.
A few questions families ask
Does everyone need to match?
No. Choose related colors, then vary the outfits. A shared palette gives the photographs a sense of connection while keeping individual personalities visible.
Can we wear jeans?
Absolutely. A clean pair of jeans can work well with a knit, blouse or jacket. Choose a wash that fits the rest of the palette and feels appropriate for the look you want.
Do we need to buy new clothes?
No. Start with what you already own. Often the missing piece is simply a layer or a different pair of shoes, not an entirely new outfit.
What if my child won't wear what we planned?
Have a comfortable alternative ready. A relaxed child in a simpler outfit is a better starting point than a perfect outfit that makes them miserable. We can still make meaningful photographs together.
